So Long, Farewell….

It’s time to say goodbye to a good thing (at least, for this year…). We now present to you: the final of the finals….the year-end blog…

Actually, not really….moreso end-of-the-year events we have planned for the rest of the month.

Anyway…. read on….

FINAL END OF THE YEAR MEETING/ZINE PARTY:

What better way to wrap things up then to have a zine party for all of our lovely VASA members and their friends? Join us on Monday March 19th from 7pm – 9pm in the seating area of the Concourse gallery – all materials will be provided for, all you have to do is bring some pens/markers/whatever you like to help us put together our ZINE which will be distributed at the end of term!  This is an open event to anyone! So bring your roommates, your parents, your teachers, your friends, and let’s have a ball!

ELECTIONS:

VASA is starting to wrap things up for the year, and it’s time now that we start the process of voting in a new exec committee. As mentioned earlier, these positions are available for the running:

President, Vice President, Finances, Events Coordinator, Textile Tea Rep, Communications Officer, Art Sale Rep, and Secretary.

If you are interested in running for any of these positions, nominations are being accepted over the next week. You can have someone else nominate you, or nominate yourself. Please send all nominations to VASALICIOUS@GMAIL.COM. The last day to nominate is Monday March 19th at 12 am (meaning Sunday night). VOTING DAY is taking place on Tuesday March 20th from 10 am – 12 pm by the VASA calendar board. Remember to stop by and cast your votes!

Hope you guys have had just as much fun as we did this year – thanks so much for coming out to the events and supporting the arts!

See you next year.

You can submit whatever artwork you wish that you feel fits into the theme of Frenger. Have a Cup of Cheer !

Are you in dire need of some Christmas cheer and fast?
Well, look no further our little art minions, VASA’s got something very special for you happening this Tuesday November 22 at 6:00 pm.

Come join us in the Knitting Nook by the stairs of the Visual Arts Building and get in the Christmas spirit by taking part in our Christmas Card Making Meeting-Party (we haven’t decided which one it is really, so we’ve decided to keep it as both).

This is our second general meeting, but is much less formal than our first. Bring a smile and some paint brushes and let’s make some homemade Christmas and other holiday-related cards until the sun comes up! There will be tons of holiday music and good company, so come with any questions you may have for our exec or just come as a break from your studies - we don’t mind either way!

We shall see you all very soon,

Candy Canes and Sugar Plums

MO’s.

Grow that Mo!

We’re halfway through November, or should we say…Movember (the month formerly known as November). Movember (in case you didn’t already know) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health.

And while not everyone is down with the Mo’, many of us realize the great cause behind this new phenomena that seems to be sweeping through cities throughout the month of November. For your own perusing, we’ve included some links for you to find out more about the Moustache initiative as, it’s not just a fad….it’s actually a pretty cool awareness campaign.

Get informed here:

http://ca.movember.com/about

Register your Mo here:

http://ca.movember.com/register

and finally, Donate here:

http://ca.movember.com/donate

Did you know some of our lovely VASA ladies are selling cupcakes on Wednesday November 16 at 12 pm at the Spoke to help support Movember?

Check out the Facebook event here:

VASA supports your desire to work that Mo. So go ahead. Do it. Whip that mo back and forth.

VASA’s Second General Meeting:

Join us on Tuesday November 22 at 6 pm where we will be having our second general meeting! This one is going to be a little less formal, as we are going to be meeting in the hallway of the Visual Arts Building and making Christmas cards for the VASA Art Sale, which begins on November 28th and goes until December 2nd! There will be hot chocolate and lots of other goodies to munch away on, and all materials will be provided for the making of the cards! Take some home and leave some to be sold for the Art Sale.

Some other tidbits (that are still equally as important):

If you haven’t already joined our Facebook group and liked our page, now’s your chance! Be in the know of what’s coming up each month in live-time:

The VASA Year-End Show:

So we finally have got all the details hammered out for you for the year-end show. It will be taking place from February 2nd – February 15th – this will be in conjunction with the AJE in the Visual Arts Building (link for more info: http://www.uwo.ca/visarts/research/2007-08/aje/aje08.html), so this will be quite a large event!

The show’s theme has also changed a little bit and we’ve decided on the theme of “Frenger” - a portmanteu (a blending of words) of the words friend and stranger – it is described as a person who is “not quite a friend but not quite a stranger.”

We would love it if you would send us an e-mail back after reading this to vasalicious@gmail.com to confirm that you WILL BE TAKING PART IN THE SHOW come February. If we do not hear from you by the beginning of January, we will assume you will not be participating in the show. This is due to the fact that we are making a publication for the show and January is our deadline to submit the work and artist’s name that will be printed in the booklets.

Remember, no matter if the work is old or new, if you feel it fits into the theme of “Frenger”, all VASA members are automatically accepted and will show their work in the Concourse Gallery!

We are also still looking for volunteers to help with the show. If you are still interested in joining, or have already joined this committee, please e-mail us back saying which AREA you would like to help in for the setting up of the show:

-       Promotion as well as helping to create the poster and the design for the show’s theme.

-       Setting up of the show on Install day and the De-install (maximum 4 people).

-       Help with the creation of the publication.

-       Help with Fundraising.

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading a real doozy of a newsletter!

C’est l’halloween!

Textile Tea is Finally Back!

October Newsletter

Hi VASA members! October is moving quickly and there are plenty of exciting events that will introduce you to, or welcome you back into, London’s art scene.

The Barroco Nova opening reception is fast approaching and is happening this Friday. For those of you who are not familiar with this exhibition, it is a three part show that has been organized by our very own Susan Edelstein and Patrick Mahon.
VASA will be crawling together
, so meet us at the first reception at the McIntosh Gallery from 5:00pm to 6:30pm, then we head off to the Artlab Gallery from 6:00pm to 7:30pm and finally to Museum London for 8:00 pm. A shuttle bus will be transporting people to the last exhibition at Museum London (for free!). You will get a taste of three different interpretations of Neo-Baroque; it is also a great opportunity to meet interesting people and get your hands on some great (and also free!) grub.

If you are interested in having a more intimate and direct exchange with a contemporary artist, then the “Speaker Series” will do just that! On the dates below, a contemporary artist, curator or cultural worker will give a speech in the Visual Arts building about their current work.

The “Art for Aids Opening” will be held at the downtown London Public Library at 7pm where Greg Kopp, Research Chair in Wind Engineering, will educate us about the wind damages to homes in Canada and a possible solution.

Make sure to come out to our Halloween Screenings and Spooky Events being held in the Visual Arts building on October 31st! Dress up, eat treats, and watch great films!

Check out our attached calendar of what’s coming up this month!

Sweet treats and Spooky dreams,

xoxo VASA.

The Visual Art Supporters' Association (VASA) is dedicated to supporting Visual Art students, the Art faculty, and beyond here at the University of Western Ontario.

This is our attempt to integrate you (the ever diligent, soul searching Visual Arts student/artiste in hiding but don't know it yet/stranger who somehow stumbled upon this link and are unsure how, but you dig it) further into the art community (small, but existant) found at UWO. Basically, we blog about: what's hot in galleries in London, ON, what we're working on, and probably, more often then not, the coffee shop that we sat at for the last 3 hours, racking our brain trying to come up with our next groundbreaking work.
